FAQ

Chapter 11 / 12Manual version v4.1.1.0English

1. What should I do if applying for a permanent activation code prompts "Please enter a valid SN"?

  • Make sure it is the SN of a purchased device. The SN of a borrowed test device cannot be used to apply; you need a trial activation code provided by a salesperson.
  • Confirm that the entered SN is complete (view the "device code" after connecting the device via Lixel Go).
  • Watch out for the difference between the letter O and the digit 0, and the letter l and the digit 1, and do not include extra spaces.
  • Domestic devices must be activated with the Chinese mainland version of Lixel Studio, and overseas devices must be activated with the overseas version; the two cannot be mixed.
  • If you still cannot apply, contact a salesperson or official technical support.

2. What should I do if Lixel Studio activation fails or prompts "License expired"?

  • Confirm whether the installed version and the region of the activation code obtained for the SN correspond. Error example: downloading the overseas installation package, selecting Simplified Chinese during installation, then activating with an activation code for a domestic SN.
  • Do not enable a VPN on the computer.
  • If it still prompts "License expired" after activation, open System Settings - Date & Time - Sync clock, click "Sync now", then restart the software.
  • Reinstalling the system without migrating the license will make the original activation code unrecoverable.
  • When importing an offline license file prompts "Invalid license", that activation code will become invalid. Make sure the request code is entered exactly (enter it manually, do not use an image recognition tool); it is recommended to confirm with technical support before operating.

3. How do I migrate a Lixel Studio license to another computer?

  • License migration requires version 3.5.0.0 or above. Go to Settings - License Activation - Transfer Out - Generate; the new activation code will be saved in a txt file, which you should keep safe and use promptly.
  • If the software was activated before the 3.2.0.0 release, the transfer-out may fail; contact your sales manager for a new activation code.
  • License migration has no count limit and does not change the license validity period.
  • Always perform the license transfer-out before reinstalling the computer's system.

4. What should I do when a pop-up prompts "Running this software requires a CodeMeter license"?

5. What should I do if activation fails or there is a permission conflict on a multi-user computer?

  • You need to install and open Lixel Studio with administrator privileges.
  • If it was previously activated under another user account, you need to delete the old activation info first: C:\Users\AdminAccountName\AppData\Local\XGrids\LixelStudio\config, then re-activate.

6. Can Lixel Studio be installed on a virtual machine or virtual server?

  • No. Virtual machines (VM), Linux, Mac, and Windows Server systems are currently not supported.

7. What should I do if Lixel Studio crashes on startup or is unresponsive after installing on a Win11 computer?

  • The system is missing the WMIC tool. Open Settings - System - Optional features, search for "WMIC" and install it, then restart the computer.
  • If it is still unresponsive, check whether the UTF-8 (Beta) option is enabled in the system "Region settings".
  • The system libraries are too old; refer to item 9 below.

8. What should I do if it prompts that msvcp140.dll, MSVCP140_1d.dll, or combase.dll cannot be found after installation?

  • The system is missing runtime library files, which is common on new computers or computers not updated for a long time.
  • Download and install the Visual C++ runtime from the Microsoft official website: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/cpp/windows/latest-supported-vc-redist
  • If it prompts that combase.dll is missing, update the system to the latest version via Windows Update.

9. What should I do if Lixel Studio or LCC shows a white screen after opening or after creating a new project?

Check the OpenGL version

- Try disabling Windows kernel (core) isolation.

Turn off core isolation

- Check whether the program is set to start in high-performance mode; if not, add the software as high-performance mode in the graphics settings (when an integrated GPU is present, non-high-performance may default to the integrated GPU).

Set high-performance mode

- It is recommended to first have your own IT staff troubleshoot. - The standard version downloaded from the official website does not support the following computer / system types: VMware Virtual Platform (virtual machine environment), Windows Server (server type), Linux (all series), MacOS (Apple computer system).

10. What should I do if opening the installation package reports an NSIS Error (Installer integrity check has failed)?

This is caused by a corrupted or incompletely downloaded installation package file and is unrelated to the software itself. It is common with interrupted downloads, repeated forwarding via WeChat / QQ / cloud drives, modification by antivirus software, or copy errors on a USB drive or network drive.

How to handle it:

  1. Check whether the file size matches the original package.
  2. Re-download the whole file from the original download link, avoiding WeChat / QQ forwarding.
  3. Copy the installation package to the computer's local disk (avoid USB drives and network drives) before running it.
  4. Temporarily disable antivirus software, then re-download and install.

11. What should I do if there is no "Engineering Processing" option after opening / the interface is missing the engineering processing feature?

Troubleshoot in this order:

  1. Run as administrator (most common and highest priority) — right-click the main program or shortcut and select "Run as administrator", or right-click Properties → Compatibility → check "Run this program as an administrator"; in most cases this step restores it.
  2. Check whether the Visual C++ runtime is missing or too old; install/update it and restart the computer: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/cpp/windows/latest-supported-vc-redist
  3. If it is still ineffective, and reinstalling and updating the graphics driver are both useless, it is mostly that the computer specs are insufficient (mainly the graphics card / VRAM), and you need to replace or upgrade the computer.
  4. The free version / feature-limited version does not include the engineering processing feature itself; having no such option is normal, and you need to upgrade to a version that includes the feature.

12. What causes the report to prompt "HBC/Xbin file parsing failed"?

  • Make sure the data copied from the device is complete and that there were no abnormal errors during copying.
  • The raw data may be missing or incomplete in size during upload/download on a cloud drive.
  • Recording was suddenly interrupted during capture, or the device stopped automatically.
  • The computer was shut down before the recording was saved.
  • With old L1/L2 firmware (1.3.2 and earlier), there was App data delay during capture, and recording was ended before the trajectory returned to the actual position.
  • Version mismatch: data captured with L1/L2-1.4 or above firmware cannot be processed in LS 2.4.5 and earlier versions.

13. What should I do if the report prompts "Too few valid points or trajectory drift, please try robust mode"?

Re-process with "robust mode" checked in engineering processing. Common causes:

  • An open or degenerate scene causing point cloud drift.
  • The device was not kept strictly still during initialization.
  • The lidar field of view was blocked during initialization, or there were too many dynamic objects ahead.
  • The device tilt angle was too large for a long time (e.g. tilted more than 30° continuously).
  • A sudden large turn while passing through a narrow space.
  • The lidar field of view faced a large number of moving objects for a long time (e.g. a crowded pedestrian area).
  • Note: for narrow scenes such as tunnels, prefer "narrow scene" mode rather than robust mode.

14. What should I do if the report prompts "Point cloud mapping - startup failed"?

  • Make sure you use Lixel Studio 3.0.2.1 or above.
  • Avoid placing raw data on the C drive or creating a project on the C drive.
  • Try logging off the computer or clearing background processes to free resources, and start the software with administrator privileges.
  • The system is missing the WMIC tool: open Settings - System - Optional features, install WMIC, then restart.
  • A routine Win11 system update may have changed the UTF-8 setting; search for "Region settings" and check the UTF-8 option.

15. What should I do if engineering processing prompts "Version not applicable"?

Reference for the corresponding App, firmware, and post-processing software versions of older devices:

L1L2L2 Pro
Firmware1.4.31.4.3/1.4.53.2.1
App1.1.91.1.9Latest released on the official website
LS2.5.2.13.2.0.0Latest released on the official website
LCC1.8.01.8.1Latest released on the official website

For L2 Pro, K2, and PortalCam devices, keep using the latest version from the official website.

16. What should I do if the report prompts that processing failed due to insufficient memory?

  • The current computer's RAM is insufficient, usually because the raw data is too large.
  • Close background programs using large amounts of memory and retry.
  • A computer with more RAM is recommended.

17. What generally causes steps such as point cloud mapping / global optimization / filtering / dynamic object removal to "crash" in the report, and how do I handle it?

  • The CPU is 13th/14th gen without an updated motherboard BIOS (microcode patch 0x12B installed); contact your motherboard manufacturer to update.
  • The computer is running multiple different software programs at once, with insufficient available RAM. Close the other running programs.
  • The project directory is processed on the C drive, where access permission is blocked; move it to a disk with more free space.
  • A temporary conflict in the computer system caused a sudden crash; try restarting the computer.
  • The project directory is on a server access path or an external disk, with an unstable connection.
  • Insufficient Windows virtual memory: if virtual memory is set on the C drive and the C drive has insufficient free space, a crash during processing is likely. It is recommended to set virtual memory to a non-system disk with more space in System Properties - Advanced - Performance Settings - Virtual Memory.
  • A laptop running at high load for a long time can crash due to insufficient heat dissipation; a desktop is recommended for processing large data.

18. What are the common types of global optimization errors and the troubleshooting approach?

  • "Optimization failed - control point matching abnormal": check whether the control point coordinates are correct and whether the coordinate system matches the RTK.
  • "Optimization failed - loop closure detection failed": confirm whether the start-to-end overlap is sufficient (≥ 15 m recommended) and whether the overlap area has enough features.
  • "Optimization failed - RTK data abnormal": check the RTK setting parameters and confirm whether the fixed-solution duration meets the requirement.
  • "Optimization failed - insufficient memory": close background programs or use a computer with 64 GB or more of memory.
  • "Optimization failed - project file corrupted": re-import the raw data and create a new project.
  • "Optimization timeout": check whether the computer power setting is set to "never sleep", and close resource-consuming background processes.

19. What causes the point cloud to become blurry after using a Bursa seven-parameter transformation?

  • Check the format and units of the seven parameters. The scale parameter unit in Lixel Studio is ppm.
  • If the obtained scale parameter unit is k, convert it to ppm: ppm = (k - 1) * 1000000

20. What are pose.csv and pose_no_offset.csv respectively?

  • pose.csv is the relative-coordinate trajectory file.
  • pose_no_offset.csv is the absolute-coordinate trajectory file (generated only when absolute coordinates exist after project optimization).

21. When the source ellipsoid is set to Other for RTK in the App, what coordinates are recorded?

  • When the source ellipsoid is set to Other, the coordinate system in the gnss.csv file is recorded as "platform", and Lixel Studio recognizes it as WGS84 by default. If the CORS port actually set corresponds to another source ellipsoid, you need to manually change the source ellipsoid during post-processing.

22. During capture the RTK green light shows a fixed solution, but RTK shows as invalid during LS processing; what should I do?

The software further filters the RTK data during processing. Make sure:

  • The number of satellites searched in the Lixel Go App is greater than 10.
  • When the RTK status shows "Fixed", the straight-line displacement exceeds 10 m.
  • When handheld, the RTK antenna tilt does not exceed 15°.
  • Make sure you follow the device capture guide.

23. What are the format requirements for an external control point file?

  • Make sure the software is updated to the latest version.
  • Download and fill in the template in the engineering processing interface; if there is none, you can get it from official technical support.
  • It is recommended to enter, in order, point name, easting, northing, and elevation.
  • No field header is needed; the first row is a usable GCP.

24. What does elevation anomaly mean?

  • The elevation anomaly is the difference between the geodetic height and the normal height of a point on the ground.
  • The datum of geodetic height is the reference ellipsoid surface, and the datum of normal height is the quasi-geoid.

25. How do I perform a start-to-end loop in the field?

  • Capture that returns within 1 meter of the start point is considered a start-to-end loop.
  • You can check "start-to-end closure" during engineering processing.
  • Note: checking this option when there is no actual start-to-end loop may cause layering.

26. Can I capture the same control point repeatedly?

  • Yes. The same control point can be captured multiple times when passing by, entering the same point name, which helps post-processing constrain point cloud accuracy.
  • Note: the coordinates of same-name control points must be exactly identical; when capturing, aim at the target center as much as possible and stay still, and ideally keep the same orientation each time.

27. What should I do if post-processing colorization prompts a crash?

When a crash occurs during the post-processing colorization stage, you can usually troubleshoot from the following aspects:

  1. Software version check
  • L1 device: if it occurs repeatedly with Lixel Studio 2.5, consider upgrading to version 3.0 or 3.1 and retry.
  • L2 device: Lixel Studio 3.2 must be used (higher versions are not supported).
  • L2 Pro devices: use the latest version provided on the official website.
  1. External camera recording standards for L1/L2 devices
  • When using the Insta360 Studio panoramic camera, shoot in time-lapse mode.
  • Ensure the capture duration is at least 2 minutes to avoid processing abnormalities caused by insufficient data.
  1. Computer performance and environment check
  • Ensure the disk where post-processing takes place has sufficient storage space.
  • Set the system power to "high performance" to avoid sleep or power-saving mode affecting the computation.
  • Avoid running large software at the same time during processing, to prevent resource contention.
  • Graphics card requirements:

    • Only NVIDIA graphics cards are supported, RTX 20 series and above, with driver version 580 or above.
    • AMD and Intel graphics cards are not supported. If no anomaly is found in the above checks, contact official technical support for further help.

28. What causes the whole point cloud to be bluish-green after L2 device onboard colorization?

  • The protective film of the onboard lens is not peeled off. Check whether the device camera lens is covered by a protective film.

29. What are the requirements for trajectory overlap in Map Fusion?

  • An overlapping path length > 15 m between two adjacent maps is recommended (15-30 m recommended).
  • Overlap in a feature-rich scene as much as possible.
  • Avoid overlapping in degenerate scenes such as open areas, long corridors, and smooth tunnels.

30. What are the methods of Map Fusion?

  • Method 1: RTK capture (with sufficient fixed solution throughout).
  • Method 2: Absolute-coordinate control points (at least 3 per map).
  • Method 3: Relative-coordinate tie points (at least one same-name point in the overlap area).
  • Method 4: Resume scanning from a breakpoint (L1/L2 devices only; not supported in low-light environments).
  • Limits: up to 10 maps, each ≤ 20 min, overlap ≥ 15 m.

31. Can data captured by different devices be map-fused?

  • No. Map Fusion requires the same device model; L2Pro 16/120 and 32/120 are not the same model.

32. How do I check the line count and range of an L series lidar?

  • Open the project.json file in the project directory and look at the LidarType field.
  • This field indicates the lidar line count and ranging distance information.

33. What causes LAS-to-RCP/E57 conversion to fail, hang, or crash?

  • The LAS file name is too long; shorten it to within 20 characters.
  • If the LAS has absolute coordinates, select "pose_no_offset.csv" as the pose file when converting to E57.

34. How do I remove excess noise points from the point cloud after engineering processing?

  • Use the Clip function in the tools to delete manually.
  • Or use the "point cloud denoising + point cloud smoothing" function. Reference parameters: search radius 0.30, neighborhood value 6 (that is, isolated points with fewer than 6 points within a 30 cm radius will be removed).

35. Can the point cloud post-processing result be imported directly into AutoCAD/3ds Max?

  • No. The LAS format must be output as an RCP file via the data conversion function before it can be imported.
  • The conversion result supports AutoCAD, 3ds Max, and Recap 2022 or above.

36. What does the prompt about an offset mean when importing point cloud data?

  • When loading an absolute-coordinate point cloud, a coordinate offset is prompted; this only changes the display position in the software and does not change the data's own coordinates and accuracy. Just click Confirm.

37. How do I export a point cloud plan view using the post-processing software?

  • Use the "3D Clip" function in the tools, and achieve the cross-section by dragging the up and down arrows.
  • It is recommended to first do engineering processing with "person removal" checked before operating.

38. Does the L2 Pro support generating Mesh in Lixel Studio?

  • Lixel Studio 3.0.2 or above supports it. You need to do engineering processing in that version and check "output panoramic photos" during colorization.

39. What should I do if Mesh production prompts "Cannot find image and position files"?

  • Select the corresponding directory inside the engineering processing result folder.
  • Make sure you use the same post-processing version for colorization.
  • For L2 Pro, check "output panoramic photos" during colorization.
  • Colorization with the L2 built-in camera cannot be used to produce Mesh.

40. Can Map Fusion output a merged Mesh result?

  • No. Mesh currently supports only a single map.

41. Can the colorized result LAS be downsampled before generating Mesh?

  • Yes. But the LAS file must be downsampled by "resampling" in Lixel Studio; it cannot be operated on in other software. After downsampling, replace the original result LAS, keeping the name identical.

42. Does OBJ format output support merging blocks?

  • No. OBJ output is a blocked file and cannot be merged into a single file within the software.
  • If merging is needed, use third-party modeling software (such as Blender, MeshLab) to do it manually.

43. Can L2 Pro upsampled block data generate Mesh?

  • No. Upsampled block data cannot be used directly for Mesh generation.
  • If Mesh is needed, use the un-upsampled original colorized result.

44. What is the point cloud enhancement feature and what are its hardware requirements?

  • Point cloud enhancement (upsampling) densifies the point cloud density, making the point cloud distribution more uniform and the colorization result more attractive, but it significantly increases the data volume and processing time.
  • Disk space requirements: 5 mm requires reserving at least 25x the original map.las size, 1 mm requires at least 465x.
  • Reference processing time (RTX 4090 + 64 GB RAM): small indoor area 5 mm about 1:2, 1 mm about 1:8; large outdoor area 5 mm about 1:5, 1 mm about 1:41.

45. What is the recommended computer configuration?

  • Processor: Intel i7 11th gen ~ i9 12th gen (recommended); Intel 13th/14th gen processors need the latest motherboard BIOS to fix stability issues.
  • Memory: 64 GB and above (64 GB+ is required for large-area or long-duration capture data).
  • Drive: 1 TB and above SSD; reserve ample processing space.
  • Graphics card: only NVIDIA graphics cards (CUDA 11.6 and above) are supported; AMD and Intel graphics cards are incompatible. Avoid using old 10-series graphics cards.
  • System: Windows 10/11 64-bit (VM/Linux/Mac/Server not supported).
  • A desktop is recommended for processing large data; laptops running at high load for a long time are prone to crashing due to heat dissipation issues.

46. What are the disk space requirements for post-processing?

  • An SSD type drive is recommended.
  • Regular engineering processing: reserve more than 5x the original project folder size in free space.
  • L2 Pro 5 mm point cloud enhancement: reserve more than 25x the original map.las size.
  • L2 Pro 1 mm point cloud enhancement: reserve more than 465x the original map.las size.

47. Can I put the project data on an external hard drive for processing?

  • No. External hard drives easily cause post-processing crashes. Processing must be done on the computer's local disk, and USB drives or LAN paths should be avoided.

48. What should I do if the stages of Lixel Studio engineering processing prompt "timeout"?

  • Check the computer System Settings - Power - Screen and sleep, and set it to "never".
  • End other large-resource background processes in Task Manager.
  • If installed on the C drive, confirm the current user has administrator privileges, or install the software in a non-C-drive directory.

49. Does Lixel Studio support multi-GPU parallel processing?

  • No. The software automatically selects one of the GPUs to run.

50. When should I use "narrow scene" mode, and what should I note?

  • It applies to narrow environments with a space width less than 3 m, such as tunnels, pipes, and mine tunnels.
  • Narrow scene mode takes priority over robust mode and has higher accuracy.
  • Control point placement requirement: place a control point every 20-30 m, and add extra ones at turns.
  • Walk at a steady speed during capture and avoid sudden large turns.

51. Can the stockpile measurement feature calculate weight?

  • Yes. Enter the material density value in the stockpile measurement result, and the software automatically calculates the weight as volume × density.
  • The density unit must match the volume unit.

52. What should I do if a LAS file cannot be opened or crashes when opening?

  • Check whether the file path is too long (a total path within 200 characters is recommended), and move the file to a short-path directory and retry.
  • Check whether the LAS file's bounding box is abnormal (coordinate values beyond a reasonable range); you can re-export and verify with a tool such as CloudCompare.

53. What should I do if a LAS file shows incompletely after loading?

  • Lixel Studio's single-load point limit is about 4.3 billion points.
  • For very large data, process in blocks or use the downsampling feature of third-party software such as CloudCompare to reduce the point density before loading.

54. What should I do if the software prompts a network connection failure?

  • Check whether the computer's network connection is stable; you can try switching from WiFi to a wired network.
  • Confirm that the firewall or antivirus software is not blocking Lixel Studio's network access permission.
  • If you are using the offline version and have completed local license configuration, some network-check prompts can be ignored.

55. What causes the GNSS map page to show "unavailable"?

  • The most common cause is that the straight-line distance over which the RTK Fixed (fixed solution) status persists is less than 10 meters, which is a hard threshold for generating the GNSS coordinate transformation.
  • Check whether the capture environment has obstructions such as tall buildings or dense trees that affect RTK signal quality; capture RTK data segments in open areas.
  • If you can only get a Float or Single solution for a long time, use the ground control point (GCP) method for coordinate transformation instead.
